All P.J. Hairston charges dismissed Friday

All charges filed against North Carolina shooting guard P.J. Hairston after his June 5 arrest have been dismissed, a Durham court clerk said Monday.

Hairston was arrested at a license checkpoint in Durham last month and charged with driving without a license and possession of marijuana.

Deputy Clerk Monica Richardson said both charges against Hairston were dismissed on Friday.

According to court records, Hairston obtained and completed an assessment Friday relating to his possession charge.

“State does not wish to proceed based upon these actions,” the record reads.

Hairston was also able to present his current driver’s license, which led to the dismissal of his second charge.

Two passengers who were arrested along with Hairston, Carlos Sanford and Miykael Faulcon, still face charges of possession of marijuana.

According to the June 5 incident report, police seized a 9mm handgun and magazine in addition to 41.1 grams of marijuana.

Durham Police Public Information Officer Kammie Michael said at the time of the arrest that the gun and ammunition were both found outside the car. She said July 10 that Durham Police did not anticipate filing any additional charges against Hairston.

Hairston was driving a rented GMC Yukon when he was stopped. USA Today first reported that the car was rented by Haydn ‘Fats’ Thomas — a felon with a lengthy criminal record, who is also awaiting trial for drug and gun charges unrelated to Hairston.

Hairston still faces a court date Aug. 2 for a speeding citation. USA Today has said he was driving a vehicle that has also been linked to Thomas.

Coach Roy Williams said July 15 while a number of disciplinary charges might be on the table for Hairston, he would wait until the legal process was finished to decide on one.

“Certainly the idea of suspending P.J. has been discussed,” Williams wrote in a statement.

“However, he is not currently enrolled in school, is not practicing with the team and we have no games until November.”

UNC’s Athletic Department has not issued a further statement since the charges were dismissed.
