Maria Palmer: Candidate for Chapel Hill Town Council

Palmer is a newcomer

With less than a week until Election Day, The Daily Tar Heel spoke with the Chapel Hill Town Council candidates to discuss major issues facing the town council. Election Day is Nov. 5.

Candidate name: Maria Palmer

Age: 52

Daily Tar Heel: What are the biggest issues facing the Chapel Hill Town Council?

Palmer: More representation of minority voices in the community

DTH: How will a background in education help you on the town council?

Palmer: I hope to foster a lot more cooperation between the council and the school board.

The school board needs support and collaboration and the town needs to offer more programs for our youth, more summer programs and more recreation programs. Kids can benefit from these programs who cannot afford some of the more expensive programs.

I would be in a position to leverage some of the town’s resources to help our community.

DTH: Why are you the best candidate for the job?

Palmer: I feel that I’m one of the best candidates but everybody has different strengths. I believe something unique that I can bring to the table is the voice of the minority community. I understand the struggle that some of the other council members don’t. I have volunteered for many years at a civil rights law firm that has represented low paid workers in the community and have founded and pastored a Hispanic congregation in the area, so I feel I know about minority voices.
