TO THE EDITOR:
“(Teachers) just feel like they’re walked over. A lot of teachers feel like they’re taken for granted.”
Gov. Pat McCrory made this statement earlier this week while discussing his plan to increase the salary of mathematics and science teachers in North Carolina. This is good news for North Carolina, which ranks 46 out of 50 states in teacher pay. And being someone who wants to teach math at the high school level, this got me really excited — then I read the rest of the article.
In his plan, there is nothing that mentions an increase in teacher pay for those in subjects outside the realm of math and science. What is he saying to those that teach English, history or fine arts?
Governor, this plan is evidence that you are part of the problem. You are the one walking over teachers and taking them for granted. Instead of lifting up those in only math and science, why not reward teachers of all disciplines? Remember, teachers are the ones who made it possible for you to become Governor in the first place.
Even though I would benefit from this plan, I don’t know if I can work in a state that rewards some teachers while devaluing others.
