SAN ANTONIO — No. 6 seed North Carolina hung on to defeat No. 11 seed Providence 79-77 behind two clutch free throws from James Michael McAdoo in the final 3.8 seconds of the game.
McAdoo was fouled by Carson Desrosiers with 3.5 seconds to play and made the first of two shots. He rebounded his own miss and held on until he was fouled by Providence standout Bryce Cotton with 1.7 seconds left.
Cotton led all scorers with an electrifying 36 points, making 13 of an attempted 23 shots.
Marcus Paige led UNC with 19 points followed by 16 apiece from McAdoo and Brice Johnson.
UNC advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament to face the winner of tonight's N.C. Central-Iowa State game.
