TO THE EDITOR:
Founder of Mothers Against Medical Error Helen Haskell will speak at a special event beginning at 6 p.m. March 27 and noon March 28 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
This free event, organized by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Health Affairs Collaborative, will be held in Kirkland Auditorium in the Koury Oral Health Sciences building on the UNC medical campus.
The event will begin with a screening of “The Faces of Medical Error: From Tears to Transparency — The Story of Lewis Blackman,” a film by Transparent Health.
The film will be followed by a moderated discussion with Helen Haskell.
Haskell became a passionate advocate for patient safety after the death of her 15-year-old son Lewis, who died in the hospital following elective surgery.
After Lewis’ death, Helen created a coalition to pass the Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Act in South Carolina.
Haskell is also a World Health Organization Patient Safety Champion and has served on patient safety advisory panels for a number of national organizations.
