A man died after jumping off an Interstate 40 overpass just north of Chapel Hill around noon Thursday, closing the roadway for about 30 minutes.

Someone spotted a man sitting on the side of the bridge on the part of N.C. Highway 86 that goes over I-40, according to a release from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

A concerned driver stopped to check on the man, but he jumped from the bridge before the driver could approach him, the release states.

The man, whose name is not being released until his family is notified, landed on the westbound side of I-40, falling into the emergency lane near the guardrail, the release states. He was not hit by any passing cars.

Orange County Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident, but the man died at the scene, according to the release.

The incident caused a minor rear-end collision between two vehicles on I-40, said N.C. Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon. The accident did not result in any injuries, Gordon said.

No further information on the incident is available at this time, said Investigator Chan McDade of the sheriff's office.
