UNC senior in serious condition after crash on U.S. 15-501

A UNC senior is in serious condition at Duke Medicine hospital after crashing into a utility pole on U.S. Highway 15-501 last week.

Jacquelyn Segovia, 21, remains unconscious after she lost control of her car around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday and ran off the right side of the road just south of Morreene Road, said Kammie Michael, a spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department.

Segovia's 2001 Honda Accord flipped and hit a highway sign post and a utility pole, Michael said in an email.

Segovia's friend and UNC senior Thaina Quiles said the car was totaled.

"It is honestly a miracle she is still alive," Quiles said.

Quiles said doctors are working to get Segovia's vitals under control.

"We don't know anything until she wakes up and starts responding," she said.

Many of Segovia's family members traveled from New Jersey to visit her in the hospital and Quiles said they are staying positive.

"Her family is obviously very heartbroken during this difficult time," Quiles said. "We are very faithful people. We believe God does miracles."
