TO THE EDITOR:
On Wednesday night, the Smith Center will turn from blue to green. UNC Athletics is joining with REPREVE, a North Carolina-based company that makes products from recycled materials. Every attendee at the UNC vs. Iowa game will be given a green UNC basketball T-shirt made from two recycled plastic bottles. That’s 22,000 shirts that will represent more than 44,000 recycled plastic bottles in the stands.
And it’s not just the fans. The band, the cheerleading team, the dance team and even Rameses will be wearing the shirts. When folks at home tune in to ESPN to watch the game, they’ll see a stadium full of green.
This game is the kickoff of a season-long recycling challenge with UNC Athletics and REPREVE. Once the goal for plastic bottle recycling at the games is met, REPREVE will make a donation to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
If you have tickets, come out to the game, bring your friends and wear your shirts. Help us show that going green is part of the Carolina Way.
