UNC men's golf finishes in second at the Liberty Spring Invitational

The North Carolina men’s golf team traveled to Amherst, Va. this weekend to play in the Liberty Spring Invitational, where the Tar Heels finished second overall with a score of 862, a 2-under tournament for the team.

William Register, a left-handed freshman from Burlington, N.C., led the way for the Tar Heels on the weekend. He started the final round of the 54-hole tournament on Saturday with the outright lead. After a combined 7-under 137 on Friday, Register shot a 4-over 76 on Saturday. He was a little disappointed in his final round, but the tie for first gives Register his second title of the season.

“I played really well the first day,” Register said. “It was good to get some confidence back after not playing so well last tournament. I think we’ve been in the lead or close to the lead a bunch in the last couple of tournaments and just haven’t finished it.”

But the team did have some players play well throughout the weekend.

Another freshman, right-handed Ben Griffin from Chapel Hill, N.C., tied for tenth with a 1-under 215. Griffin shot a strong final round, carding seven birdies and five bogeys to go 2-under on the day.

Griffin had a better day on the scorecard Saturday, but he definitely is not complacent, especially with the ACC Championships just around the corner on April 24, in New London, N.C.

“After this week, in general, I played all right,” Griffin said. “I wouldn’t say I was on top of my game exactly, but at the end of the day, I was only two shots out of winning the tournament. I felt like it was a little off, but I was still able to get my name up there.”

Sophomore Carter Jenkins from Raleigh, N.C. also put up a strong performance, finishing tied for 13th.

The tournament was held at the Polar Grove Golf Course, a 7,059-yard long par-72 course in Amherst. Oklahoma ended up winning the tournament 15 shots ahead of the Heels.

Coach Andrew Sapp thought the team had some up and downs throughout the tournament, a tough battle to have when Oklahoma was playing as well as they did.

“We played poorly coming down the stretch,” Sapp said Saturday. “We’ve got a lot of things we can take from this, some learning points and some areas to improve.

"We have 12 days to get ready for ACCs, so (we're) looking forward to getting home and getting to work.”
