Stephanie Mavunga, the second-leading scorer on the North Carolina women's basketball team in 2014-15, may soon join her teammate Allisha Gray in transferring from UNC to another school.
Mavunga averaged 14.4 points per game and led the team in rebounds with 9.6 rebounds per game.
UNC announced Friday it granted Mavunga a release to speak to other schools about the possibility of transferring.
In a statement, Mavunga said she is grateful to Coach Sylvia Hatchell, the coaching staff and fans of UNC women's basketball, and she asked for permission to explore a transfer with a heavy heart.
"I have nothing but great things to say about the program and I am very grateful for the mentorship and development that I received along the way at UNC," she said in the statement.
In a statement, Coach Sylvia Hatchell said she wished Mavunga the best. She also expressed a hope to quiet talk about the future of the women's basketball program at UNC.
“There has been a lot of speculation surrounding our program in recent weeks and that’s all that it is — speculation," Hatchell said in the statement.
If Mavunga transfers to another school, all four of the players who made up 2013's top-ranked recruiting class will have left UNC. Star recruit Diamond DeShields left the program after the 2013-14 season, guard Jessica Washington mutually agreed with UNC to part ways in May, and Gray announced she was transferring to the University of South Carolina earlier today.
