Opinion: Students should join the bone marrow registry

Orange County Superior Court Judge Carl Fox is undergoing a tough battle with blood cancer. Fox needs a bone marrow transplant, and he has done great work to publicize his situation and of others in need of bone marrow transplants.

All should consider registering to become bone marrow donors but especially students and other young adults. According to Delete Blood Cancer, an organization that registers bone marrow donors, college students make the best donors due to their youth, health and engagement.

The process is simple. Potential donors can either find a swab drive locally or sign up to receive a swab kit in the mail. Participating is free, but people with means are encouraged to make donations to help cover the costs. A drive specifically in Fox’s name is scheduled for Oct. 24 at a cornhole tournament at Lucky B’s in Raleigh.

Students also can set up additional drives locally themselves with the help of organizations like Delete Blood Cancer or Be the Match, an organization that operates the national bone marrow registry. Other organizations like Swab a Cheek, Save a Life, which focuses on diversifying the bone marrow registry, also deserve special recognition.

But the place or organization a person registers through is relatively unimportant; it’s most important to get on the registry in whichever way is most convenient for the individual. Doing so could save Judge Fox’s life or someone else’s.
