Brice Johnson clutch again for UNC men's basketball in his final home game

Brice Johnson is screaming — again. Fists clenched, arms flexed. You know how he gets.

But this time is different; it’s more than a basketball play. There’s a minute and change left in the No. 8 North Carolina men’s basketball team’s eventual 75-70 win over Syracuse, but at the time, UNC is only up three points.

Joel Berry pulls the trigger from deep, uncorking a shot just behind the arc. It clanks — hard — off the rim. Find the ball, get to the ball. Who has the ball?

This is where Johnson comes in. He leaps in the air, one white shirt in a mob of orange ones, and somehow manages to get his hands on the ball.

“What other person would you expect to get that rebound?” Kennedy Meeks said.

Now it’s Berry’s turn to wait, but there’s no mad dash for the rebound this time. Johnson hops back up and lets go of a floater. Swish.

“Thank God he’s down there getting the rebound,” Berry said. “I don’t know what the score was at that point, but we needed it to close out the game."

Syracuse snagged a late steal, but Johnson’s bucket ultimately was too much for the Orange to overcome. Another post move? Yes, technically.

But by all accounts, it was much more. In that one moment, Johnson epitomized four years of growth, of pushing and being pushed to the brink, and finally coming out on top.

So flex, Brice, scream.

You know how he gets.

Quotable

“To me, the day was about winning. I didn’t care how. I didn’t care if we shot the ball well. I didn’t care if we’d rebounded it well. I just wanted to look up at the clock and see that we had more points.” — Coach Roy Williams on the importance of Johnson, Marcus Paige and Joel James winning their final home game for UNC

Notable

With the win, UNC has clinched a double-bye in next week’s ACC Tournament. The Tar Heels can lock up the No. 1 seed with a win Saturday against Duke. Also, a North Carolina win to finish the season would give UNC its first ACC regular-season title since the 2011-12 season.

Three numbers that matter

53: Bench points for UNC compared to just 16 for Syracuse. The Orange play primarily six guys, but the Tar Heels are the exact opposite. Eleven different players attempted a shot Monday night, with 10 of them scoring points.

4: Paige is one of just four players in UNC history to score at least 1,500 points and record at least 500 assists. The other three? Phil Ford, Kenny Smith and Jeff Lebo.

18: Double-doubles for Brice Johnson this season. The senior from Orangeburg, S.C., had 14 points and 10 rebounds against Syracuse in his final game in the Smith Center. He’s the only UNC player averaging more than six boards per game.

What’s next?

UNC will finish up the regular season against its crosstown rivals, Duke. The team will travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium for Saturday’s game, which will air on ESPN at 6:30 p.m.
