Letter: HB2 is a deterrent to attending UNC

TO THE EDITOR:

I am a freshman at Carrboro High School and I am in our school’s Sexuality and Gender Alliance Club. I would like to go to UNC to get a degree or two, but I cannot support them if they continue to enforce House Bill 2. People should be able to be themselves.

The government said that transgender people and others should not be able to use the restroom that makes them feel more comfortable because they might attack people in the same restroom as them.

That is very, very unlikely. They are the ones getting attacked — not the ones attacking. Also, this bill allows people to discriminate freely. Yes, people should be able to share their opinions and beliefs, but not to oppress others. Are they worth any less than your fellow person? Like I said earlier, I would really like to attend UNC to get a degree or two. But I will not if they continue to make my allies and friends feel unsafe to do something as trivial as go to the restroom or wash our hands.
