It's official.
On Wednesday, North Carolina football coach Larry Fedora said rising redshirt junior Mitch Trubisky will start at quarterback when the Tar Heels head to Atlanta on Sept. 3 for their season opener against Georgia.
The Mentor, Ohio native threw for 555 yards and six touchdowns while completing 85.1 percent of his passes a season ago. He also had 16 rushes for 101 yards and three touchdowns.
Trubisky has competed for the starting job with former quarterback Marquise Williams in each of the past two offseasons, with both players taking snaps during the 2015-16 season.
Though Fedora didn't officially name a starter until Wednesday, Trubisky — the only UNC quarterback on the roster with a career completion — was expected to take over heading into the season.
In North Carolina's spring game on April 16, Trubisky completed 13 of 22 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
"I thought Mitch did a good job this spring and didn't just assume he was going to be the starter. He worked extremely hard and earned it ..." Fedora said in a press release.
"He worked hard this spring, competed every day and deserves to be the starter."
