Provost reviews searches for deans with Faculty Executive Committee

At Monday’s Faculty Executive Committee meeting, members listened to Provost James Dean discuss the search for dean vacancies and financial planning.

“One of the big things that I’ve been spending time on lately is dean searches, of which we have several going on now,” Dean said.

Dean said they are currently looking for people to fill the dean positions at the School of Nursing, School of Social Work and School of Dentistry.

Dean said the search for the dean of the School of Nursing has been narrowed down to four finalists, the first of which is on campus today and tomorrow. He said the search for the dean of the School of Social Work has become more complicated, and they are working out additional people to interview. Lastly, he said they are in the early stages of searching for a dean for the School of Dentistry.

The remainder of the meeting Dean discussed University finances.

“I, and my colleagues in South Building, are thinking about money on sort of three different levels,” Dean said.

Dean said the first level involved the budget for next fiscal year. He said they are waiting for state legislatures to make final decisions, but they have a pretty good idea of what the cut will be.

Dean said the second level involves discussions over the last six months about a new budget model. He said they hope to move towards a more formula driven model versus the current model that runs more on judgment to create transparency.

Rosa Perelmuter, professor in the department of romance studies and committee member, asked about representation of smaller departments if a formula was used.

“It always worries me when things are whittled down to formulas,” Perelmuter said.

Perelmuter asked if anyone had expressed fear that smaller departments may suffer under a formulaic model. Dean said he had, and it happens at multiple levels when deciding how to allocate money.

Dean said the third level involves ensuring long-term financial sustainability.

Michael Gerhardt, professor at the law school and committee member, spoke about House Bill 2.

“It isn’t just about bathrooms, it’s about state politics, it’s about federal politics, it’s about the relationship with the federal government and the state government," Gerhardt said. "This is just a vehicle to play all that out for the fall."
