18-year-old dead after shooting, 4 charged with murder

An 18-year-old died after a shooting Tuesday night in northeast Chapel Hill, police said.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. on Jackie Robinson Street, near Legion Road, according to a Chapel Hill Police Department press release.

Chapel Hill residents Malik Devon Brown Burnette and Tanner Cobb, both 18, were injured and brought to UNC hospitals, police said.

Burnette died at the hospital while Cobb is in stable condition, police said.

Police have charged four people with first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon among other felonies. They are Laquida Poston and Renaire Lewis II of Shelby, Thomas Oliver of Gastonia and Jalen Raekwon Hackney of Burlington.

Police said they have a warrant for the arrest of a fifth person, Denzel Lamont Spikes of Shelby, in connection to the shooting.

UNC Spokesperson Jim Gregory said no one involved in the shooting had UNC connections.

Chapel Hill Police Captain Donnie Rhoads said one of the suspects knew one of the victims.

"They had planned to meet up there, so it wasn't random," he said.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the whereabouts of Denzel Spikes should call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 942-7515.
