TO THE EDITOR:
Alexander Peeples’ column rightly casts doubt on the intellectual seriousness of UNC’s new environmental think tank. Climate research commissioned by Phil Berger is about as reliable as a tobacco study paid for by Phillip Morris.
However, Peeples’ insinuations about Vice Chancellor Brad Ives are wide off the mark. Ives is an advocate for sound environmental policy; one aspect of his job is working out how to transition the University power plant away from coal. His presence at the helm of the new “collaboratory” is the only thing protecting UNC’s academic reputation from association with Phil Berger’s junk science.
