A fire alarm went off around noon on Monday at Davis Library.
Department of Public Safety spokesperson Randy Young said the Chapel Hill Fire Department was investigating after the alarm went off on the second floor.
"There is not a reason for concern," he said.
Students filed out and filled the Davis courtyard waiting for the library to reopen. They sat on the ground with their laptops, notes and lunches while the main doors were closed.
Sophomore Alex Lutton said she heard the alarm go off and the announcement say, 'This is not a drill.'
"I think it was kind of inefficient just because of the bottlenecking getting out, but I don't know what else to do," she said.
Susan Wrenn, facilities manager for University Libraries, said they were not sure of the exact cause of the alarm, but she speculated that the alarm was due to faulty sensors that are getting too old.
"Our speculation is that it was a bad sensor that made the alarm go off," she said.
She said the fire department checked the two sensors where the alarms were going off and determined there was no fire. Life Safety Services then came to reset the fire pump and then the panel was turned back on.
