TO THE EDITOR:
As Interim Superintendent of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, I take great pride in our school system. But I have also found that we face many school facility challenges with aging schools that have many deficiencies.
Our Board of Education has developed a plan to meet these building needs, beginning with the reconstruction of Chapel Hill High School and the conversion of the Lincoln Center campus into a Pre-K center, administrative offices and expanded alternative school site. This is an appropriate and cost effective first step with other projects to follow in future years.
We must first pass the Orange County School Bonds which is on the back of this year’s ballot. It includes $120 million in school bonds of which CHCCS will receive $70 million. $50 million will fund needed facility issues in the Orange County Schools. There is also a $5 million Affordable Housing Bond on the ballot.
Both bonds are needed to keep our community a fantastic place to live, learn and work.
