Word on the Street: How do you study for finals?

With final exams closing in, students are starting to hit the books in different ways. Staff writer Brinley Lowe asked students, "What study method do you use and why?"

Junior Marza Hill

Anthropology and chemistry major

“Reading over the notes in the PowerPoint and trying to go back through it in my mind or talking through it with a friend. Usually reading through the notes helps me get everything verbatim and talking through it with a friend helps you verbalize it, and I just like studying with a friend too because it’s more fun.”

First-year Kaitlin Scott

Psychology and exercise and sports science major

“I like reading through PowerPoints and going over my notes and then at the end kind of going through all of it again and kind of making, like, study guides and diagrams and charts. I feel like it gives you a chance to put everything together at the end and it’s kind of a good way of figuring out if you know the information or not.”

Junior Corey John

Communication studies major

“I actually like studying in noisy places like Starbucks, and then putting headphones in. I like seeing motion around me so I don’t get distracted and then fall into a trance. It kind of helps me.”

Sophomore Ryan Clinton

Business and philosophy major

“I like to take notes on my computer in class and I like to go over those and write them out by hand afterward, and then I read out loud to myself in a study room or something so I understand it a little bit better. Most of the time I review PowerPoints two or three times right before the test and take it and try to do well.”

Sophomore Nat Ruark

Peace, war and defense and political science major

“I usually see if any of my friends are going to the library or find a spot to study and I go hang out with them because I actually get more motivated to do my work when I’m with people who are doing their work as well."

First-year Ash Pike

Biology and psychology major

“I like to use what I call a faceted study method where I use different resources. Like, for instance, in Chem 101, we have this thing called ALEKS which tests you on various things, so I’ll go and do that for like an hour or so and then I’ll go back to my textbook and reference videos so I just kind of keep changing it up. It helps keep me focused because I’m not doing the same monotonous task over and over.”
