UNC men's basketball prepares for Boston College's backcourt duo

UNC forward Isaiah Hicks (4) grabs a rebound against Syracuse on Monday night. The Tar Heels will face Boston College on Saturday.

How do they play?

Guards Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman are capable of taking their defenders off the bounce.

The Eagles work the ball around the arc until a lane opens for Bowman or Robinson to look for their own shots or kick the ball out. Boston College shoots 37.2 percent on nearly 20 3-point attempts per game.

Although the Eagles have two dynamic scorers, they struggle in the half court and look to score in transition. Boston College ranks in the top 50 in adjusted tempo, but the Eagles might want to slow the game down against UNC.

Who stands out?

Bowman initially committed to play football at North Carolina. But the guard from Havelock, N.C., decommitted from the Tar Heels to pursue basketball at Boston College.

It looks like Bowman made the right choice. In a Jan. 1 win over Syracuse, Bowman scored 30 points and shot 7-for-8 from the 3-point line. Bowman takes his football background to the basketball court with his fearless play and ability to absorb contact.

While Bowman has dealt with the ups and downs of being a first-year point guard, Robinson — a sophomore — has been a steadying force.

Despite playing at Broughton High School in Raleigh, Robinson was overlooked by all of the major programs in the state. But as a primary off-ball scorer, Robinson averages 19.7 points per game because of his ability to score on all three levels.

What’s their weakness?

With such a young backcourt, it comes as no surprise that Boston College turns the ball over too much. Averaging 15.9 turnovers per game, the Eagles rank 331st out of 347 teams in the country.

Live-ball turnovers are a recipe for disaster for Boston College, as North Carolina has shown this season to be at its best on the fast break.

How they could win?

The Eagles need to shoot well from the outside, but this game depends more on which UNC team shows up.

The Tar Heels will have to avoid letting the noon start and small crowd lull them to sleep like it did at Georgia Tech on New Year’s Eve.

If UNC starts sloppy, the Eagles have enough firepower to send North Carolina home with an embarrassing loss.
