The UNC Board of Elections extended the deadline for candidates to gather 1,250 student signatures due to the water crisis and suggested evacuation from campus.
"We realize that the fact that many people have left the area makes it much harder to campaign for signature and could severely impact the use of Hall Storming tomorrow evening," Paul Kushner, chairperson of the Board of Elections, said in an email.
Kushner said the length of the extension depends on the length of the water outage. The extended deadline will be announced once the water outage ends.
To prevent the extension from impacting the campaign period, Kushner said the election and runoff date will be pushed back. The election will be held one week after signatures are due and runoff elections will be one week after that.
Candidates originally had until Feb. 7 to gather signatures to be placed on the ballot.
