Letter: DTH sports coverage is not sexist

TO THE EDITOR:

Although the UNC women’s basketball team may have won their game by a buzzer-beater, they still do not need the coverage that the men’s team does. The UNC women’s basketball team is not nearly as popular as the men’s.

The women’s basketball team already receives equal funding as the men’s under Title IX. If they want more coverage, then they need to be performing at the level that the men’s teams are.

This is not just the case for women’s sports. No team at UNC — men’s or women’s — receives the coverage that the men’s basketball team receives. This is because no team performs as well or is as popular as the men’s basketball team.

If you want to promote the women’s basketball team, or any other women’s team here at UNC, then go to the game and get your friends to go, too. Take pictures and post them. There are actions that can be taken to promote the women’s basketball team, but providing front-page coverage of this less-popular team is just not going to happen.
