The North Carolina softball team confidently headed out to Greensboro riding an 11-game winning streak. The Tar Heels (16-5) saw their streak end, however, as they were defeated by UNC Greensboro 6-3 on Wednesday.
What happened?
UNC had a scoreless first inning, only getting one hit. The Spartan’s scored two runs after first-year Jordan Gontram homered to left field for two RBIs. They continued to hold momentum, earning themselves four home runs by the end of the first inning.
The second and third innings remained uneventful with no runs for either team. The Tar Heels had one run by first-year Micaela Abbatine. However, UNCG (12-7) also scored, keeping their four-run lead.
UNC spent the sixth inning scrambling to close the gap. Senior Kendra Lynch hit a home run to right field, allowing sophomore Berlynne Delamora to run safely home.
Although UNC had the bases loaded during the final inning, they were unable to capitalize on their efforts.
Who stood out?
From the hitting perspective, Lynch stood out the most. Her two-RBI homerun during the sixth inning brought a little bit of life back into the team. Defensively, first-year Campbell Hutcherson made a statement with five putouts.
