Mel’s Commissary and Luncheonette is open in Carrboro and serving Southern home-cooking to area residents.
Since opening in March, owner Melody Bowers said business has been good.
“I had no expectations,” she said. “I didn’t really know what to expect, and I am appreciative and I look forward to everyday that my people continue to come through the front door.”
Mel’s serves traditional southern staples all using Bowers’ mother’s recipes. When Bowers opened the restaurant, she wanted to create a place that feels like coming home.
“They often tell me that they feel like they’re sitting at their momma’s kitchen table,” she said. “So I feel like I have accomplished that.”
The restaurant is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
