On Monday evening, UNC Wilmington announced that it had hired North Carolina assistant basketball coach C.B. McGrath to be the head coach for the Seahawks starting in the 2017-18 basketball season.
McGrath has spent his entire coaching career with UNC basketball head coach Roy Williams. He was an administrative assistant for four years under Williams at Kansas and followed Williams to Chapel Hill. McGrath was the director of basketball operations for the Tar Heels in the 2003-04 basketball season and served as either an assistant coach or director of basketball operations ever since. For the last nine seasons, he's been an assistant on the coaching staff.
The Seahawks finished out the 2016-17 season with a 29-6 record. UNCW made the NCAA Tournament last season as a twelve seed but lost to Virginia in the first round by a final score of 76-71. UNCW plays in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Kevin Keatts, the Seahawks' coach last season, left following the year to take a job to be the new head coach at N.C. State.
The move will be made effective on Tuesday, April 4, following the conclusion of the UNC men's basketball season. North Carolina plays Monday night in the men's basketball national championship game against Gonzaga.
