Word on the Street: Why do we celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day is celebrated each year in America on the first Monday in September. It is usually celebrated with lake days, cookouts and back-to-school parties. But how many people actually know why we celebrate this holiday?

Elliott White and Marielle Meyer

Sophomore pre-business and statistics major and sophomore pre-business and psychology major

“I think we have Labor Day to celebrate when everybody can work for themselves, but their efforts will help the economy prosper,” Meyer said.

“Labor Day is a day where we celebrate people who are currently serving our country,” White said.

Julianna Cybrynsky

 First-year undecided major

“Oh man, this is just like Watters' World. He asks people super easy questions, but nobody knows the answers to them.  Are we celebrating the workforce?”

Phoebe Powers

 Sophomore pre-business major

“Labor Day commemorates the unions and the labor movements that were made that kind of pushed towards the eight-hour workdays and other labor regulations that gave more appreciation and rights to workers.”

“Labor Day is just a day to celebrate the hard work people have put in all year and a way to kick off fall and to mourn the death of summer."
