Coffee-loving students were taken by surprise when Carolina Dining Services temporarily relocated the to-go coffee cups from their regular location in Top of Lenoir Dining Hall.
The to-go cups are usually located upstairs near the coffee, but they were temporarily moved downstairs because of a health issue.
CDS Marketing Director Brittany Cook said an inspector from the Orange County Health Department said the way that the cups were dispensed was unsanitary.
“What was happening is students were pulling down the plastic, and it wasn’t being preserved anymore,” Cook said. “So the health inspector said that it was unsafe if someone were to come over and all of those cups were exposed then, from germs' perspective.”
Cook said the cups were moved downstairs and handed out by employees, away from the germs of the Lenoir customers.
The cups have now been moved back to their original location, and Cook said they are dispensed in a much more sanitary way.
“We purchased a holding unit that holds the cups, the lids and everything in a way that covers it up,” Cook said. “That was acceptable for the Orange County Health Department, so she permitted us to put them back upstairs so that now it’s all taken care of.”
Cook said that Top of Lenoir received a score of 100 during their health inspection last week.
As of 4:42 p.m., the cups were back upstairs, with no change to the way they were placed before. In Chase Dining Hall, the cups are now in a dispenser as described by Cook.
