Letter: Is the UNC Boycott effective or useful?

There have been numerous small riots and boycotts on campuses before, and there will be more in the future.

UNC students are participating in a boycott in order to persuade the actions that need to be taken to remove Silent Sam from the UNC campus. I do not think this boycott addresses the problem at hand.

There have been numerous small riots and boycotts on campuses before, and there will be more in the future.

In 2016, students fought to change the name of the Woodrow Wilson Library at Princeton, but were ultimately denied, showing that a sit-in is not a large enough movements to affect multimillion-dollar institutions. If all of the people of color un-enrolled at Princeton, that’s a much larger statement than a sit-in.

Their actions did get people talking, it started conversations about race relations, but once the big man said no to the change, how much more has been heard about the issue?

Yes, there is conversation around the boycott, but if the BOG says no again, will the conversation continue?

There are many different minority groups that exist, and we can’t just ignore all other minorities in order to focus on one problem. The world is a complex place with many ongoing problems.

I fear that this type of specific targeting will not harm UNC. They are a well endowed system. It is the workers at the businesses being harmed, that, yes, are housed at UNC.

I do applaud people stepping up to start the movement, but I think more critical thinking needs to be done.
