President Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday. Staff writer Georgia Wieland-Stanford asked students if they are planning to watch the address and what they are expecting.

Amogh Sharma

Senior computer science major

“I feel like there’s been a lot of tension with North Korea. And so I want him to talk about that. I feel like he’s very hot-headed about that. The economy’s a big thing. North Korea’s a big thing. Those are the two main things for me.”

Grace King

Senior political science major

“To be honest, I didn’t know it was happening, but I probably will watch it, probably on my phone or computer. I’m not super optimistic. I would guess it’s probably going to go about the same – like pretty divisive – as things generally are with the current administration.”

Annabelle Rahal

Junior biochemistry major

“I’m going to watch it if I have time. I have a TV in my room. It could go either way. It could be powerful or just completely unnecessary. I’m generally hopeful.”

Hanna Wondmagegn

First-year journalism and global studies major

“I definitely am planning on watching it. Probably live if I can. I think it would be really cool to sit with people and watch and gauge the reactions. I’m not expecting much, honestly. State of the Union used to be something you looked forward to, to know what’s going on. Now it’s just a joke every time. It’ll be interesting.”

Zac Cyr-Scully

Senior public policy and political science major

“I’m not sure what I’m expecting. I think it’ll be interesting. I’m looking forward to hearing what he’s going to say because it’s probably going to be controversial. It’s just going to raise more questions.”
