The NC state races filing period begins Monday. Here's what you need to know to run.

As primaries for the 2018 midterm elections approach, a number of new challengers to North Carolina incumbents are set to emerge on the local and national level. Candidates must file with the North Carolina Board of Elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, North Carolina state legislature and county offices beginning next Monday and ending Feb. 28. 

2018 North Carolina state races and their respective qualifications include:

US House of Representatives: All 13 N.C. seats open

Qualifications:

  • 25 years of age or older
  • U.S. citizen for at least 7 years
Resident and registered voter of North Carolina. A candidate running for Congress is not required to be a resident of the congressional district in which the candidate is seeking election. 

Filing: Candidate must file a notice of candidacy form with the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement.

Fee: $1,740

North Carolina State House of Representatives: All 120 seats open

Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Residence in district for one year prior to general election 
  • Registered to vote in the district and eligible to vote for the office

Filing: Candidate files notice of candidacy within their county board of elections.

Fee: $207

North Carolina State Senate: All 50 seats open

Qualifications:

  • 25 years of age or older
  • Resident in North Carolina for at least one year prior to election
  • Resident in district one year prior to election
  • Registered to vote in district and eligible to vote

Filing: Candidate files notice of candidacy within their county board of elections.

Fee: $207

County Offices:

Qualifications: 

  • 21 years of age or older 
  • Must live in the electoral district
  • Must be a registered voter in the electoral district and eligible to vote

Filing: Candidate files notice of candidacy within their county board of elections. 

Fee: 1 percent of annual salary
