Facade of pedestrian bridge torn off, Rosemary Street closed to traffic

The bridge over East Rosemary that connects the CVS building and the Bank of America Parking Deck collapsed Sunday afternoon.

A portion of the side of the pedestrian bridge between the Bank of America parking deck and the CVS building crossing East Rosemary Street broke off Sunday afternoon.

Chapel Hill police officer Preston Oppegard said the incident was caused when a dumpster on the back of a garbage truck slid off the back of the truck and lodged in the top of the bridge, hitting the facade and ripping it down.

A portion of East Rosemary Street is currently closed to traffic while police wait for an engineer to come and assess the safety of the bridge. The parking decks on either side of Rosemary Street will stay open throughout the afternoon.

"We want to make sure it remains structurally sound, especially given the events occurring across the country. We don't want to be taking any chances," Oppegard said.
