Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Superintendent Pamela Baldwin unveiled a new strategic plan after reflecting on her first year in the position during the “state-of-the-schools” address.

The address, hosted by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools PTA Council, was given on Wednesday night at Culbreth Middle School. The event featured nine different speakers, two of which were students.

During her first year, Baldwin kept three main goals in mind for the school system: having fun, taking risks and encouragement.

Board of Education Chairperson Rani Dasi started the event, and addressed the threats made to three schools last week. Dasi thanked teachers, principals and local law enforcement for dealing with the situation.

“We are committed to making purposeful change,” Dasi said.

Assistant Superintendent Todd LoFrese echoed Dasi’s statements that safety is a top priority, and emphasized the importance of School Resource Officers. Safety protocols will also be reviewed and revised.

Plans for the renovation of Chapel Hill High School were revealed. LoFrese announced an open house on May 2, where the public will be able to see the plans up close.

Kris Cuthbertson, a senior at East Chapel Hill High School, was one of the students who spoke, and introduced Assistant Superintendent Rydell Harrison.

Harrison leads the Instructional Services Division, which uses his “personalized learning” approach. Personalized learning focuses on academic instruction, behavior support and social and emotional development.

Harrison thanked all of his coworkers in the division, but made sure to recognize the hard work done by all of the teachers.

“The real work happens with our talented teachers,” Harrison said.

Baldwin thanked the PTA Council, Teacher of the Year Michael Jones, the Board of Education and the students. Her appreciation for the entire school system was evident.

“The people who run our schools and classrooms are pure gold,” Baldwin said.
