Volleyball sweeps Elon in last match before ACC play

Destiny Cox (1) spikes against UNC-Greensboro in Carmichael Arena Friday, Aug. 31.

The North Carolina volleyball team (4-5), won a 3-0 sweep against Elon in an unplanned match Tuesday evening. The match was scheduled in order to compensate for games both teams lost due to Hurricane Florence.

What happened?

The Tar Heels were able to pull ahead at the end of the first set to win, 25-20, after coming back from an early deficit and then exchanging points with the Phoenix for most of the set. The second and third sets were more one-sided as North Carolina was able to gain an early lead and maintain it, winning both sets 25-18.

Who stood out?

Although it was a good team effort for the whole match, first-year Destiny Cox had a great performance. With 10 kills, she helped lead the Tar Heels offensively and was consistent throughout the match, leading them to a win on the day.

When was it decided?

Although North Carolina fell behind early in the first set by a score of 16-14, the Tar Heels were able to bounce back to win the set, 25-20. After making a comeback in the initial set, UNC was able to win the next two sets rather smoothly by scores of 25-18.

Why does it matter?

This win comes at a good time for the Tar Heels who lost two out of three in the Buffs Invitational. It would have been a rough transition to go from that weekend, miss two matches due to weather, then jump right into ACC play.

“With everything going on with Florence, we didn’t know when were going to play again, this helped us get back into a rhythm,” Sagula said.

North Carolina had a fairly rough start to the season, and to win this match heading into conference play means a lot for both the team's record and morale.

“We feel really fortunate Elon was willing to host us,” Sagula said. “We’ve learned how to win differently, and this helps us get into a rhythm.”

When do they play next?

North Carolina kicks off ACC play this weekend, playing Notre Dame on Friday and Louisville on Sunday, both games in Chapel Hill. They hope to capitalize on the win against Elon, as well as the unexpected rest Hurricane Florence provided to the team.
