UNC volleyball swept in loss to Clemson, falls to 1-11 in ACC play

volleyball vs uva
UNC Coach Joe Sagula disappointed with his team's performance against UVA on Sunday October 14th in Carmichael arena.

The North Carolina volleyball team (5-16, 1-11 ACC) fell to the Clemson Tigers (13-12, 4-8 ACC) by a score of 3-0 Sunday, making this the ninth loss in a row for UNC.

What happened?

On the way to South Carolina this weekend, the Tar Heels knew this was their chance to make a comeback. Starting off strong, the Tar Heels outhit the Tigers in the first two frames, but Clemson retaliated quickly.

In the first two sets, UNC gave Clemson a tough challenge. UNC earned the first point of the match on a block from Katharine Esterley and Madison Laufenberg. The Tar Heels pushed hard against Clemson, losing the first set, 26-24.

The second set saw even more of a push from the Tar Heels. UNC was in the lead early with a score of 6-4, but the Tigers ultimately took control with a final score of 29-27.

Though UNC put up a good fight, Clemson prevailed in the end, with the last set of the match resulting in a score of 25-20.

Who stood out?

North Carolina’s strongest players of the match were first year Destiny Cox and junior Skylar Wine, with each player managing 11 kills in the game. Wine also had a total of 3 blocks.

When was it decided?

The first two sets were very close, with much effort being put in from both sides of the court. However, after a hard rally in the second set, it proved to be difficult for the Tar Heels to put up a fight in the third.

UNC still managed to take the lead with a score of 20-18 in the last set, but Clemson ultimately maintained its sweep with a final set score of 25-20.

Why does it matter?

This is now North Carolina's ninth consecutive loss. However, the players were able to make each set count with close final scores.

With a game against neighboring rival Duke coming up this week, UNC will have to fight to ensure that its losing streak does not break into the double digits.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels will be playing their rivals, the Duke Blue Devils, at home on Friday, Nov. 2 at 6:30 pm.
