UNC defeats UNCW, 7-6, in walk-off thriller to begin regional play

First-year Danny Serretti (1) celebrates a home run during the Tar Heels' third baseball game against Boston College on Easter weekend, 2019.

In the first game of the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Tournament, the North Carolina baseball team (43-17, 17-13 ACC) defeated UNC-Wilmington (32-30, 12-12 CAA) 7-6 on Friday in thrilling fashion.

Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the ninth, the Tar Heels used a solo home run from first-year Aaron Sabato to tie the game. Then, with the bases loaded, first-year Danny Serretti travelled too far down the base path and found himself trapped in a rundown. When UNCW's throw to home sailed over the catcher's head, Serretti slid headfirst for the winning run, giving UNC a walk-off win to begin NCAA Tournament play.

What happened?

The Tar Heels got on the board early, when junior Ike Freeman hit a single up the middle with two outs in the first inning to bat in junior Michael Busch.

In the second inning, UNC added to its lead when junior Dylan Harris doubled and redshirt junior Dallas Tessar blasted a ball over the left field wall, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. The home run was the first of the season for Tessar, and just the third of his career.

The Seahawks got their first run of the day in the fourth inning, when Brooks Baldwin tagged up on a deep fly ball from Noah Liles.

In the sixth, the Seahawks used a three-run inning to take their first lead of the game. First, a solo shot from Noah Bridges with one out cut the UNC advantage to one. Then, when UNC starter Tyler Baum stepped off the mound for sophomore Joey Lancellotti, the Seahawks hit a double to the warning track to take a 4-3 lead.

The Tar Heels took the lead back in the seventh inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Freeman and Martorano.

After a Sabato walk, Freeman hit a ball in the gap to send Sabato home and tie the game at four. Then, after Ashton McGee struck out swinging, Martorano hit a ball up the middle, allowing Freeman to score standing up and giving UNC a 5-4 lead.

Down to their final outs, the Seahawks manufactured a pair of runs to reclaim the lead in the ninth. When McGee couldn't hold on to a grounder to second base, the Seahawks scored the tying run with one out in the inning. Then, UNCW hit a line drive down the left field line, and North Carolina threw the runner out at home – seemingly, at least, until the call was reversed, giving the Seahawks a 6-5 lead going into the game's final frame.

Tar Heels fans wouldn't have to wait long for the tying run, however. On the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth, Sabato hit his 15th and most timely home run of the year, evening the score at six runs apiece and sending the Chapel Hill crowd into a frenzy.

Moments later fans had to begrudgingly make way to shelter after a lightning delay was issued. Nearly three hours later, the game began again in a significantly more damp and less crowded Boshamer Stadium.

But the fans that stayed wouldn't have to wait long to see the Tar Heel walk-off. Three UNC walks loaded the bases, then Serretti's overzealous baserunning turned into a blessing for North Carolina when he was able to slide home after the Seahawk error.

Who stood out?

Ike Freeman was the only Tar Heel to record multiple hits on the day, going two for three at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Dallas Tessar's two-run home run also deserves a mention, helping give North Carolina an early lead.

But it was Sabato's timely home run that gave the Tar Heels all the momentum heading into the weather delay, momentum that seemingly, improbably, remained to propel UNC to the win.

When was it decided?

This one wasn't decided until the final moment, when the UNCW error allowed Serretti safe passage home and prevented a dramatic Seahawk upset.

Why does it matter?

Friday was UNC’s third meeting with the Seahawks this season. The Tar Heels also claimed the first two matchups, winning 4-3 on Feb. 26 and 11-4 on March 13, with the latter coming in Wilmington.

With the win, the Tar Heels have moved to 1-0 in regional play, one step closer to the super regional round in Atlanta.
