The Lumina Theater will close its doors this fall.
The theater, which has been a staple of Southern Village for the past 19 years, will cease operations on Sept. 2. The building will undergo renovations, said D.R. Bryan Jr., a partner of the theater.
Bryan said competition and a recent change in the nature of the movie market, including the rise of non-theater movie viewing options, hurt The Lumina's attendance.
“The quality of what people can watch at home has gone up so consumers don’t come out to the movies as much as they used to,” Bryan said.
Outdoor movies will continue on the Village Green after Sept. 2.
The future of the building's interior remains uncertain.
“We are exploring different possibilities, but nothing has been decided yet,” Bryan said.
