UNC football reveals upgraded locker room and weight room

Mack Brown opens new locker
Mack Brown opens up one player's locker to display the pad and glove storage that hangs over each unit.

Upon his return to Chapel Hill, North Carolina head football coach Mack Brown made it known that the facilities at Kenan Football Center needed an upgrade in order to keep up in recruiting, and told players he planned to do so. This week, he delivered on his promise.

In a private viewing on Monday, the UNC football team was shown an upgraded locker room and weight room. The team Twitter account posted several videos documenting the players' reactions, and their excitement was through the roof.

First reported by GoHeels' Lee Pace, the biggest highlights of the newly renovated spaces include:

  • Stainless-steel lockers with fans to dry helmets, shoulder pads and knee braces, a variety of storage cubbyholes and USB ports in each locker.
  • A Gatorade refueling nutrition station that players can use to craft their own recovery and bodybuilding drinks.
  • An Astroturf playing surface, the same kind recently installed for five different NFL teams.

The new facilities will also include sleeping pods for the players.

The newly renovated locker room and weight room are part of investments made into athletic spaces across several sports.

In the spring, UNC unveiled its new Lacrosse and Soccer Stadium on the space formerly occupied by Fetzer Field. The previous fall, UNC opened a new indoor football practice facility and a new stadium for field hockey, Karen Shelton Stadium.

Anticipation for the upcoming football season is high, as the athletic department announced that season tickets have sold out for the first time since 2008.

But before the season gets underway, the players will have to get through a month of training camp and settle several key position battles.

The Tar Heel season kicks off in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium against South Carolina on August 31.
