The North Carolina women's basketball team notched its ninth win of the season with an 85-45 victory against UNCW in Myrtle Beach, S.C on Friday.

What happened?

North Carolina came out of the gates hot, starting the game on a 15-3 run in which first year forward Malu Tshitenge scored eight of the team’s points.

Following this initial run, the Seahawks did little in the way of slowing down the Tar Heels offensive attack. North Carolina continued to put points on the board throughout the first quarter, going into the first break with a 19-7 lead.

In the first quarter, North Carolina separated themselves through turning second chance efforts into points. UNC finished the first period with 10 second chance points, as opposed to UNCW’s zero.

North Carolina once again looked dominant to start the second quarter, pulling themselves to a 14 point lead at the five minute mark by way of a three from senior guard Shayla Bennett.

The Tar Heels continued to take advantage of impressive post play in the second period, using its 14 points in the paint to pull its lead to 22 points, 42-20, going into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room the Tar Heels continued their dominance. Starting the third quarter on a 20-0 run, North Carolina never seemed to take its foot off the gas pedal, and UNCW struggled to find an answer to UNC post play.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 67-28 lead, North Carolina’s offensive attack continued to flourish. Spreading its lead out to a final score of 85-45, and attaining a 40 point victory, UNC’s bench impressed in the final period of play, finishing with 11 of the team’s 18 points in the final period of play.

Who stood out?

Tshitenge’s put together an outstanding individual performance for North Carolina in the post. Finishing with a double-double, she led the team in scoring with 19 points, totaling her largest scoring output of the season.

When was it decided?

If the Tar Heels 22 point halftime lead wasn’t enough to ensure victory, then the 20-0 run they put together to start the third quarter certainly did. With a lead of over 40 points, and a continuing high level of offensive success, North Carolina’s third quarter run put the game out of reach.

Why does it matter?

North Carolina’s 9-1 start is its best since the 2014-15 season. Following a tough loss at Alabama in their last game, the Tar Heels played with intense energy against UNCW. With one last pre-conference game before ACC play begins, UNC will look to ride early season momentum to a successful year.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels will be back in Chapel Hill for a match-up against Yale next Saturday at 1 p.m. for their final pre-conference game.
