The North Carolina women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday against Alabama, 83-77.

What happened?

After falling to an early deficit against the Crimson Tide, the Tar Heels found their touch offensively at the mid way point of the first quarter, taking the lead for the first time at the five minute mark by way of a three pointer from senior guard Taylor Koenen.

Both sides did well on the offensive end throughout the period, with North Carolina maintaining its lead through a high scoring first quarter, 26-23.

Coming out of the break, both sides would continue their offensive success. Koenen and junior forward Janelle Bailey were particularly impressive for North Carolina, with the two finishing the first half with nine and 10 points, respectively.

The second quarter saw multiple lead changes, with both teams scoring at a high level. Still, the Tar Heels went into halftime with a lead, 43-40, as they have in all nine games up until this point of the season.

Alabama came out of the locker room hot, turning their three point deficit into a 50-45 lead four minutes into the third quarter. Guards Brittany Davis and Megan Abrams were particularly impressive for the Crimson Tide, with both of the sophomores finishing the double digits within the second half.

The three ball was not dropping for Alabama throughout the game, with the team only hitting its mark on four attempts overall for the game, but success in ball movement and interior penetration from its guards made the game competitive.

Despite Alabama’s offensive success, North Carolina went into the fourth quarter maintaining a slight edge, 64-62.

The final quarter saw a continuation of this offensive exchange. Both sides traded leads through the first four minutes of the quarter, before Alabama separated from a 70-70 tie to take a lead it would never give back.

The match-up was close until the very end, with North Carolina mounting a comeback attempt that pushed it within two points with under a minute to go. Despite this effort, the Crimson Tide pulled away to an 83-77 victory in the final seconds of the game.

Who stood out?

Koenen and redshirt senior guard Madinah Muhammad both had outstanding games for North Carolina. The senior duo led the way with 36 points for the Tar Heels, scoring nearly half of the team’s scoring output. Both guards finished with over 30 minutes played, and were major pieces in the flow of the offense.

When was it decided?

A jumper from Alabama sophomore guard De’sha Benjamin with 23 seconds remaining put the nail in the coffin for North Carolina. Alabama took a two possession lead from this shot and put the game out of reach. With a four point deficit, North Carolina missed its next shot down the court and was forced to foul for the remainder of the game.

Why does it matter?

This year’s 8-0 start was North Carolina’s best since the 2014-15 campaign. Despite the Alabama loss, UNC is showing signs that success is going to come in Courtney Banghart’s first year as the head coach in Chapel Hill.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels will head to Myrtle Beach next Friday for a match-up against UNCW at 7:30 p.m.
