Update Sep. 9, 2020: Former North Carolina women's basketball head coach Sylvia Hatchell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by vehicle on Tuesday. In January, Hatchell was involved in a fatal accident that resulted in the death of Betty Colby.
A Division of Motor Vehicles incident report said that Hatchell was only driving 2 mph when one of her side mirrors struck Colby, causing her to hit her head on the pavement.
Hatchell was sentenced to a 30-day suspended sentence, six months of unsupervised probation and 50 hours of community service. She also received a $150 fine and is required to pay $190 in court costs.
Former North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell was cited in a crash that killed a woman in a Durham parking lot, WRAL reported Friday.
Hatchell was cited for misdemeanor death by vehicle and unsafe movement violation, according to police. The woman, Betty Colby, 89, died Wednesday after the crash Monday, which police said happened around noon.
The crash took place in a parking lot on Farrington Road in Durham, near O2 Fitness. Colby hit her head on the pavement after the impact, according to WRAL. Investigators stated neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash.
Hatchell, 67, coached the Tar Heels for 33 years before resigning in April after an investigation into alleged racist remarks.
