Here's how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting the 2020 census

DTH Photo Illustration. Undercounting in the 2020 census may seriously impact Orange County results. The numbers will help state, local and national officials plan for future development. Children under 6, ethnic minorities, renters and migrants often do not participate in the census often due to reasons such as the fear of what the government will do with the information and lack of funding.

The 2020 census is still taking place despite the COVID-19 outbreakwith some minor changes.

Orange County’s Complete Count Committee (CCC) is a group of volunteers whose goal is to increase awareness and participation in the census, according to Orange County’s website. Staff writer Meredith Radford spoke to Renee Price, chairperson of Orange County’s CCC, to learn about the adjustments to the census. Here's what you need to know.

What changes did COVID-19 cause?

In-person events and gatherings that were planned, like census 2020 kickoffs, have been canceled. There will still be social media, radio and online promotions of the census. The deadline to fill out the census has been extended from July 31 to Aug. 14. The time when census takers will go door to door to ensure that people fill out the census has been pushed back to May. These dates are subject to change again, depending on what happens with COVID-19. Other than that, the census can still be taken by mail, on the phone or online as usual.

How can people fill out the census?

Census invitations to respond were sent in the mail starting on March 12, but you can also fill it out online by going to my2020census.gov. You can request a paper version of the census if you don’t receive one in the mail.

What if people speak a language other than English?

The census can be translated to you in 13 languages through the toll-free line: 1-844-330-2020. For Spanish speakers, there is another toll-free line: 1-844-468-2020.

Who will see the information I fill out in the census?

The census information you provide is confidential for 72 years. It will not be used for anything besides the census. Your information will not be shared with anyone, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Will anyone be coming to my door if I don’t fill it out?

Yes, starting in May you can expect census takers to come to your house if you haven’t responded yet. That is subject to change depending on the COVID-19 outbreak. Do not expect anyone from the census coming to your door before then. If someone does, they are not actually a census taker.

Why should I fill out the census?

"I think the biggest thing is for people to realize that they’re supposed to fill out the census," Price said. "It’s something that’s mandated in the Constitution, so we need to do this."
