A Kenan Residence Hall resident adviser goes to pick up a key for a new resident on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020.

Carolina Housing will terminate multiple student staff positions effective Oct. 30, according to a Thursday email from Executive Director of Carolina Housing Allan Blattner and Senior Director of Residential Education J. Kala Bullett.

The positions being terminated by Carolina Housing include: resident advisers, package center staff, community managers, office assistants and resident adviser mentors.

This decision comes after Carolina Housing announced students remaining on campus would be consolidated and 14 residence halls would close.

In the email, Blattner and Bullett said the decision to terminate student staff stems from projected revenue losses of $20 million for the fall 2020 semester.

Carolina Housing does not receive revenue from tuition or other student fees and receives no state appropriations, and payroll is one of Carolina Housing's highest expenditures, they said.

Staff still living on campus may continue to live on campus at their current room rate.

Last semester, student staff positions were initially terminated after residence halls closed. A group of resident advisers and other staff members then wrote a letter demanding student staff be paid the full amount of their stipend.

The UNC System later issued guidance providing for student administrative leave, allowing UNC to pay student staff

But Blattner and Bullett said in the email that "there is no indication that this mechanism for funding full-time or student employees will be provided by the UNC System at this time."
