The November election is coming up, so The Daily Tar Heel is breaking down every state and local office on the ballot, from governor to county commissioner. Here, we broke down who the candidates are for governor.
The roles of the governor in North Carolina include signing bills into law, managing the state budget and overseeing the state executive branch. The governor can also form state task forces to deal with specific issues, such as racial equity or the COVID-19 pandemic
In the 2020 election, Democratic candidate Roy Cooper and Republican candidate Dan Forest are on the ballot for the North Carolina governor race.
Democrat Roy Cooper is currently serving his first term as governor of North Carolina. Previously, Cooper served in the N.C. House of Representatives and the N.C. Senate, as well as serving four terms as the state's attorney general.
Republican Dan Forest is serving his second term as the state's lieutenant governor. Before that, Forest, an architect, was an office president and senior partner at Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, the largest architectural firm in North Carolina.
In a survey conducted by the DTH, UNC students said the issues they care about most are health care, student debt, civil rights, wages/labor, the environment and LGBTQ rights and policies.
Neither Cooper nor Forest responded to requests for comment on those issues; the following information comes from their campaign websites, government websites and press conferences:

If he is reelected, Cooper hopes to expand Medicaid and continue to fight the drug use crisis in North Carolina. According to Cooper's website, Medicaid expansion will not cost taxpayers any additional money.
