Since 1974, Residential Services, Inc. (RSI) has been guided by one foundational principle: measure success by what is achieved by the people it supports, rather than by what the organization has achieved.
For the children and adults RSI serves, it’s ensured they find success daily — whether this means making a new friend, giving back to the community or getting a job.
RSI is a private, nonprofit organization that provides community-based supports to people with developmental disabilities. Its vision is to empower these individuals to lead lives characterized by happiness, dignity, health and the highest possible degree of social responsibility and productivity.
A central way RSI pursues this vision is by providing personalized living options and related supports to people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Within the RSI community, all people are known, cherished and encouraged to succeed, no matter the situation.
Founded in Chapel Hill by a group of parents, community leaders and UNC professionals, RSI was a local changemaker in the 1970s when it opened some of the first community homes in North Carolina.
Continuing this history of leadership, RSI still serves as a model for home and community based supports today. For nearly five decades, RSI has grown from a single home for 6 individuals to 16 supervised-living homes, including Spring Glen, a continuing care retirement community opened in 2003.
RSI is guided by five core values:
- Caring about people
- Building relationships
- Responding
- Leading by example
- Enjoying what they do
Every action that is taken by RSI on a day-to-day basis is guided by these values.
For similarly value-driven individuals with an interest in human services, RSI has a variety of open part-time and full-time opportunities.
No matter the level of experience or desired role, one guarantee of working at RSI is job satisfaction. Not only is the work enjoyable, it’s rewarding, as people’s lives are constantly impacted by the relationships made and support provided by RSI’s employees.
Since its founding, RSI has rapidly grown and continues to extend the services it provides. In addition to residential services, RSI has an independent living program and a vocational and learning services division. Because of this growth, employees at RSI have the opportunity for quick career advancement into the supervisory roles of Direct Support Coordinator, Supervisor of Support Services and Program Director.
Many employees at RSI began as Direct Support Professionals and moved to one of the three supervisory roles within the first year or two of hiring.
If individuals are looking to continue their education, many RSI employees have been accepted to graduate school for a variety of programs. These include, and are not limited to clinical psychology, social work, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
The experience gained working at RSI provides individuals with all the tools needed for a competitive edge when applying for graduate programs or advancing their career in the human services field.
In addition to the unique opportunity to work directly with others, the job is rewarding and fulfilling. No matter the final goal, the work at RSI is rewarding and fulfilling. Even if the task seems small, the impact is large and heavily appreciated by all of the individuals RSI serves daily. To explore RSI and its opportunities, click here.
