Sutton’s Drug Store has been a UNC staple for almost a century. With the slogan, “Feeding Chapel Hill since 1923,” this old-fashioned diner is a favorite among the UNC community because of the warm environment and low prices.
No individual item at Sutton’s is more than $8. If you’re looking for a simple sandwich and chips for lunch at a low price point, order any of Sutton’s deli sandwiches for $6.79 and add a drink and fries for only $2.79. If you’re not in the mood for a sandwich, ordering a salad or a wrap will actually save you $0.10.
With these prices, it’s easy to see why Sutton’s is a favorite – and why it won Best Lunch Bargain this year
If you’re looking to save money and show some Tar Heel pride, Sutton’s has many Chapel Hill-themed sandwiches to satiate hungry students. Order a Roy’s Reuben – corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing – or a Tar Heel Turkey – turkey, swiss cheese, onions, tomatoes and thousand island – to get the true UNC treatment.
Not only is Sutton’s a great place to find a lunch bargain – many consider the restaurant to be deeply ingrained in the UNC experience. Many current and former students have formed great memories here with friends over a sandwich or a milkshake.
“Sutton’s feels more like a community than a restaurant and has been one of the few constants through seasons of change during my Carolina experience,” said junior Connor Groce. “I always know I can walk in the door to be greeted by friendly people who remember me, serve great food at a great price and get a taste of what the Carolina family is all about.”
Many in the community share this sentiment. After a tough year due to the pandemic, hundreds rallied behind Sutton’s and raised more than $30,000 to keep the restaurant and its traditions alive.
