The North Carolina Tar Heel women’s golf team, ranked 47th in the NCAA, traveled to Wilmington, N.C. this past weekend, where they competed for the final time as a team this semester at the Landfall Tradition hosted by UNC Wilmington.
The Tar Heels were one of 19 teams in attendance, including seven top-25 ranked teams. The team finished in 14th place overall and had two players finish at top-50 in the field.
What happened?
The Tradition features a three-day, three-round tournament in which each team sends five players, of which the top four scores will contribute to the overall team score. UNC’s starting players included sophomore Natalia Aseguinolaza, junior Krista Junkkari, sophomore Crista Izuzquiza, first-year Stephany Kim and junior Kayla Smith. Junior Aleks Golde also made the trip to compete individually.
After day one, the Tar Heels had a team score of 306, finishing third-to-last in the pack, with individual contributing scores coming from Junkkari (75), Aseguinolaza (77), Izuzquiza (77) and Smith (77).
Following day two, the team improved to a round score of 298 with contributions from Junkkari (72), Aseguinolaza (75), Izuzquiza (75) and Kim (76).
On the third and final day the team managed to move up four spots in the tournament with its best score yet, a 290 overall with individual scores coming from Junkkari (73), Aseguinolaza (71), Izuzquiza (73) and Kim (73).
Who stood out?
Aseguinolaza shot a one-under-par 71 for the team’s best round score, allowing her to finish at a seven-over 223, good for 43rd in the field overall. Junkkari was Carolina’s top individual finisher at a four-over-par 223, tying for 30th overall.
