After taking a week off for final exams, one may think it would take time for the North Carolina women’s basketball team to adjust to being back on the court.

This was not the case for the Tar Heels, who continued their undefeated start to the season by defeating UNC-Asheville 107-46 on Sunday in Carmichael Arena.

This game was the highest score at home for the Tar Heels since a 109-44 win over Gardner-Webb in 2011 and the first triple-digit game for North Carolina since scoring 100 at Elon in November 2018.

“We kept our foot on the gas throughout the whole game,” sophomore guard Deja Kelly said. “We finally reached over 100 points, so that was exciting. It was just a really good game to head us into this next week.”

Prior to the start of the game against the Bulldogs, the Tar Heels were off to their 13th 8-0 start in program history. But this season is the first time that five of those wins were earned on the road.

Following their successful match against UNC-Asheville, the Tar Heels are 9-0 for the 12th time in program history, and for the first time under head coach Courtney Banghart.

Sunday was a complete team win for North Carolina with an impressive performance from several players.

Sophomore guard Alyssa Ustby earned her fifth double-double in nine games, and in addition to marking its season-high in scoring, the team also distributed a season-high 24 assists, with Ustby, graduate transfer Carlie Littlefield and sophomore Kennedy Todd-Williams contributing four assists each.

“Twenty four assists I’m really happy with, 50 rebounds I’m really happy with,” Banghart said. “You know, I have high expectation that we can score the ball individually and collectively, so those numbers don’t really jump out at me. That’s sort of the expectation.”

Kelly and Ustby led the team in points with 19 each. They were followed by Littlefield with 17, sophomore Anya Poole with 16 and Todd-Williams with 13.

North Carolina held a drastic lead throughout the entire game. The Tar Heels scored the game’s first 10 points, and at the end of the first quarter led 27-10. By the end of the first half, North Carolina was leading 53-17, marking the highest output in a single half for the team this season.

Entering the final quarter of the game, North Carolina led 84-26. The score gap got as high as 66 points at 96-30, which was the team’s largest lead of the season.

The win against the Bulldogs puts North Carolina at 6-0 in the overall series against UNC-Asheville. The Tar Heels will look to continue the momentum with ACC play set to begin on Sunday, Dec. 19, at Boston College.

“Coach Banghart has just been reiterating that throughout the week — ‘share the ball, share the ball,’” Ustby said. “We have our best offense when we share the ball, and we just proved that to ourselves today, and we’re going to keep doing that in the future."
