Duke Energy reports widespread power outage across Chapel Hill

UNC receives energy from the Cogeneration Plant on its campus as well as from Duke Energy.

Duke Energy reported a large power outage across Chapel Hill Friday morning that has affected at least 10,000 homes.

As of 9:10 a.m., traffic lights on East Franklin Street, Fordham Boulevard and parts of Raleigh Road are out, according to a statement from The Town of Chapel Hill.

If a traffic signal has no power, it should be treated as a four-way stop. However, if a traffic signal is blinking or flashing red, drivers are required to make a complete stop, check to see if anyone is coming from another direction and proceed with caution.

Flashing yellow signals indicate the driver can proceed carefully across the intersection.

There is currently no estimation on when power will be restored.
