Editor's note: The severe thunderstorm warning has been extended until 7:15 p.m., according to an Alert Carolina message sent at 6:13 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a severe thunderstorm warning on Wednesday until 6:45 p.m.
The warning was issued at 5:46 p.m., according to an Alert Carolina notification.
According to the alert, this means conditions are favorable for a strong thunderstorm to produce dangerously large hail or high winds, capable of causing significant damage in and near the affected area.
The alert also said the University recommends that all students, faculty and staff find shelter indoors, avoid windows and stay alert. If the weather service issues a tornado warning for Chapel Hill and Carrboro, UNC will activate emergency sirens.
